OUR WORK
Mātaki projects have covered topics such as conservation finance, waste management, biodiversity protection, regulatory system reviews (strategic and operational), environmental monitoring and reporting and policy development and evaluation. As close to home as down the road and as far afield as Papua New Guinea!
A big thanks to the wonderful clients that bring the crunchy and interesting work we love!

Client
PROJECT
Strategic review of the approach to conservation covenant monitoring (landowner engagement, ecological monitoring and monitoring and management of compliance with covenant requirements).
SOLUTION
Mātaki was honoured to lead this important and timely review, as QEII approaches its 50th year and takes stock of how it performs its role. Through a programme of fieldwork, stakeholder interviews and engagement with QEII staff, a thorough review was undertaken, leading to the development of a range of recommendations to be considered and implemented over the coming years.

PROJECT
Development of thought leadership on voluntary nature credit markets in Aotearoa
SOLUTION
In a partnership between ecologists and economists at the Bioeconomy Science Institute (Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research Group) and Mātaki Environmental, we are developing a series of Policy Briefs providing insights and analysis on the challenges with biodiversity markets and the essential guardrails that will be needed for these markets to deliver for nature.

PROJECT
Lead a programme of research and analysis into the funding and support of community conservation in New Zealand
SOLUTION
Mātaki administered a significant survey and interview programme, in addition to secondary research to develop a comprehensive picture of the state of community conservation funding. The report and associated material were widely circulated and several public webinars and speaking opportunities helped to message the content. Dedicated sessions with government departments, councils and Philanthropy New Zealand helped amplify the report recommendations
Alongside the busy private practice, Mātaki Director Dr Marie Doole researches and writes on public interest topics in environmental policy and regulation in addition to teaching and mentoring.
A key current focus is understanding and mitigating the risk of regulatory capture. In the past year two papers have been published in Policy Quarterly, both leading to numerous national and international speaking engagements to professional organisations, regulators and general audiences.
